HISTORY OF THE MACARON

Yes... well research of course included food in France as I plan a trip to Reims!  The original Macaron originated in Nancy, France (a medium sized town to the east of Paris about half way to Strasbourg), and the real macarons were not the double layered cream-filled cookies we all have come to love!

The macaron was created in 1793 just after the King and Queen were hauled away by the Revolutionists (might it have had something to do with the comment "Let them eat cake!"?

The real macaron came in one flavour (quelle domage!) vanilla, and you guessed it - it was the Sisters from the local monastery who created this gem.
